AWWA C200-23 is a steel water pipe standard developed by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Its official title is “Steel Water Pipe, 6 In. (150 mm) and Larger.” The standard is intended for steel pipe used in water systems, with a nominal diameter of 6 in. (150 mm) and larger. The current AWWA standards list identifies C200-23 as the applicable C200 edition.
What Does AWWA C200-23 Mean?
The name AWWA C200-23 can be understood in three parts:
- AWWA: American Water Works Association
- C200: Standard designation for steel water pipe
- 23: 2023 edition of the standard
AWWA’s current standards list identifies C200-23 as: Steel Water Pipe, 6 In. (150 mm) and Larger. The 6 in. (150 mm) threshold is an important part of the standard’s scope. It places C200-23 primarily within the range of medium- and large-diameter steel water pipe used in water infrastructure.

AWWA C200-23 Water Pipe Types
AWWA C200-23 covers steel water pipe 6 in. (150 mm) in nominal diameter and larger. The scope includes electrically butt-joint-welded straight-seam pipe, spiral-seam pipe, and seamless pipe for the transmission and distribution of potable, raw, and reclaimed water, wastewater, and other water-system facilities.
AWWA C200-23 LSAW Steel Water Pipe
For large-diameter water transmission projects, LSAW is particularly useful because the manufacturing process can accommodate combinations of: Large Diameter + Heavy Wall + Controlled Geometry + Longitudinal Weld. One important feature of LSAW pipe is that the main seam runs parallel to the pipe axis.
LSAW pipe is manufactured using two processes—UOE and JCOE—both of which allow for precise control of wall thickness and dimensions. AWWA C200-23 contains specific provisions for permissible dimensional variations. For example, the standard specifies a maximum outside-circumference variation of ±1.0% (subject to a cap of 3/4 in. or 19 mm) and a maximum deviation from straightness of 0.2% of the pipe length.
SSAW Steel Water Pipe
Unlike LSAW pipe, which is formed from plate with a longitudinal seam, SSAW pipe is manufactured by forming steel strip or coil into a cylindrical shape at an angle. The resulting weld seam forms a helix around the pipe.
One practical advantage of SSAW is its ability to efficiently produce large-diameter pipe from coil.
Seamless Steel Water Pipe
The absence of a longitudinal weld is the main structural distinction between seamless and welded pipe. For very large-diameter water transmission systems, welded pipe—particularly LSAW or SSAW—can be more practical because large diameters can be manufactured from plate or coil with controlled dimensions and wall thickness.
How AWWA C200-23 Steel Pipe Is Used in Water Transmission
AWWA C200-23 steel water pipe is not simply a steel tube used to carry water. In a water transmission system, the pipe is one part of a complete hydraulic and mechanical system that includes the water source, pumps, valves, fittings, joints, coatings, internal linings, field welds, and installation structures.
- Raw Water Transmission
- Potable Water Transmission
- Treated Water Transmission
- Municipal Water Distribution
- Irrigation Water Pipelines
- Industrial Water Pipelines
- Wastewater Pipelines
- Long-Distance Water Transmission
- Large-Diameter Water Mains
This makes AWWA C200-23 more than a steel pipe specification: it provides the foundation for understanding how large-diameter steel pipe functions within modern water transmission infrastructure.
AWWA C200-23 Steel Materials
The AWWA C200-23 standard specifies requirements for pipe materials, drawing upon numerous ASTM standards in its formulation. Additionally, the material provisions of C200-23 require the listed steel to be fully killed and to conform to fine-grain practice.
Steel Plate, Sheet and Coil
LSAW water pipe is generally manufactured from steel plate, while other welded pipe configurations may use plate, sheet, or coil depending on the manufacturing process.
The material must provide an appropriate combination of:
Strength + Toughness + Formability + Weldability
This is especially important for large-diameter pipe because the steel undergoes substantial forming and welding during manufacturing.
AWWA C200-23 Steel Materials- Fully Killed Steel
One important material requirement in AWWA C200-23 is that the listed steels shall be fully killed and conform to fine-grain practice.
Killed steel is steel that has been sufficiently deoxidized before solidification. Common deoxidizing elements include:
- Aluminum
- Silicon
- Manganese-containing alloying/deoxidizing systems
The basic idea can be simplified as: Control Oxygen → Improve Solidification Quality → Reduce Internal Defects → Produce More Consistent Steel Plate. The requirement for fully killed steel is not simply a steelmaking detail. It helps establish a more controlled and consistent starting material for the pipe manufacturing process.
ALLLAND manufactures large-diameter LSAW steel water pipe according to applicable AWWA C200-23 and project-specific requirements, with options for internal lining, external coating, weld inspection, hydrostatic testing, and project documentation.
