The chemical composition requirements specified in DIN 2458 refer to base material standards (such as DIN 1626 / EN 10025) and are controlled in conjunction with the steel grade.
| Grade | Element % | ||||
| C | Mn | Si | P | S | |
| St 37 | ≤ 0.17 | ≤ 1.40 | ≤ 0.35 | ≤ 0.045 | ≤ 0.045 |
| St 44 | ≤ 0.21 | ≤ 1.50 | ≤ 0.35 | ≤ 0.045 | ≤ 0.045 |
| St 52 ⭐ | ≤ 0.22 | ≤ 1.60 | ≤ 0.55 | ≤ 0.035 | ≤ 0.035 |
DIN 2458 is characterized by low carbon content, moderate manganese content, and strict control of impurities (P/S). While ensuring weldability, it balances material strength with a certain degree of toughness.

St 37 (≈ S235) has lower strength but offers high ductility and is easy to weld, making it suitable for low-pressure and structural applications.
St 44 (≈ S275) offers a good balance of strength and ductility and is commonly used in municipal and medium-load structures.
St 52 is the market’s leading steel grade; it offers high strength while maintaining good weldability, making it the top choice for engineering projects.
DIN 2458 does not explicitly require a Charpy impact test; however, such testing is typically conducted in low-temperature environments, for grades with specific quality requirements (e.g., St 52-3), or when specified by project specifications.
Standard mechanical property verification tests include tensile testing, bending testing, and flattening/expanding testing.

Municipal Pipelines: Water supply, drainage, and gas distribution.
Industrial Pipelines: Industrial water, compressed air.
Structural Applications: Steel frameworks, piling.
● Common steel grade: St52 (≈ S355).
Energy & Infrastructure: Water pipelines, non-critical pipelines.
● It should be noted that DIN 2458 is not suitable for use in high-pressure main oil and gas pipelines; it is primarily intended for use in medium- and low-pressure environments.
