DIN 2458

DIN 2458 is an important standard for steel pipes within the German Industrial Standards (DIN) system. It primarily applies to welded steel pipes and specifies their dimensions and tolerances, particularly for carbon steel or low-alloy steel pipes used for conveying fluids (liquids and gases) and for structural applications.

DIN 2458 Chemical Composition

The chemical composition requirements specified in DIN 2458 refer to base material standards (such as DIN 1626 / EN 10025) and are controlled in conjunction with the steel grade.

GradeElement %
CMnSiPS
St 37≤ 0.17≤ 1.40≤ 0.35≤ 0.045≤ 0.045
St 44≤ 0.21≤ 1.50≤ 0.35≤ 0.045≤ 0.045
St 52 ⭐≤ 0.22≤ 1.60≤ 0.55≤ 0.035≤ 0.035

DIN 2458 is characterized by low carbon content, moderate manganese content, and strict control of impurities (P/S). While ensuring weldability, it balances material strength with a certain degree of toughness.

CEV=C+(Mn/6)+((Cr+Mo+V)/5)+((Ni+Cu)/15)

Tensile Strength, Rm360 – 510 MPa410 – 560 MPa490 – 630 MPa

St 37 (≈ S235) has lower strength but offers high ductility and is easy to weld, making it suitable for low-pressure and structural applications.

St 44 (≈ S275) offers a good balance of strength and ductility and is commonly used in municipal and medium-load structures.

St 52 is the market’s leading steel grade; it offers high strength while maintaining good weldability, making it the top choice for engineering projects.

DIN 2458 Testing Requirements

DIN 2458 does not explicitly require a Charpy impact test; however, such testing is typically conducted in low-temperature environments, for grades with specific quality requirements (e.g., St 52-3), or when specified by project specifications.

Standard mechanical property verification tests include tensile testing, bending testing, and flattening/expanding testing.

Applications of DIN 2458 Steel Tubes

Municipal Pipelines: Water supply, drainage, and gas distribution.

These projects generally do not require pipes to withstand extremely high pressures, and cost control is a priority. DIN 2458 pipes are significantly less expensive than seamless pipes or high-grade API pipeline pipes, yet they meet stricter standards than ordinary structural pipes.

Industrial Pipelines: Industrial water, compressed air.

DIN 2458 has a strength range of 235 MPa to 355 MPa, making it suitable for medium- and low-pressure conveying systems. Dimensions are flexible and can be customized for specific projects.

Structural Applications: Steel frameworks, piling.

Common steel grade: St52 (≈ S355).

Energy & Infrastructure: Water pipelines, non-critical pipelines.

It should be noted that DIN 2458 is not suitable for use in high-pressure main oil and gas pipelines; it is primarily intended for use in medium- and low-pressure environments.
