GOST 10705-80 “Electrically Welded Steel Pipes—Technical Specifications”
Russian:
Трубы стальные электросварные. Технические условия
English:
Electrically Welded Steel Tubes — Specifications
This standard applies to electrically welded straight-seam steel pipes (ERW / Electric Resistance Welded Pipe) manufactured from carbon steel and low-alloy steel, with outer diameters generally ranging from 10 to 630 mm, for use in pipeline transportation and various structural applications.
GOST 10705 is roughly equivalent to the Russian version of the ERW welded steel pipe standard.
2.What Does Grade 20 Mean?
Grade 20:
| Standard | Grade |
| GOST | Steel 20 |
| China | 20# |
| ASTM | Similar to A106/A53 low carbon grades |
Note: They are not entirely the same.
| Element | Content |
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.20% |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.17–0.37% |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.35–0.65% |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤0.035% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.035% |
| Property | Value |
| Tensile Strength | ≥410 MPa |
| Yield Strength | ≥245 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥21% |
The low-carbon composition of Steel 20 provides good weldability and toughness, making it suitable for general-purpose pipeline systems.
Although GOST 10705 Grade 20 is not typically used as a main high-pressure oil and gas transmission pipe, it is often applied in auxiliary pipeline systems.
For higher-pressure oil and gas transmission projects, standards such as API 5L line pipe are usually selected.
Due to the good machinability and weldability of Steel 20, GOST 10705 Grade 20 pipes are widely used in mechanical industries.
For load-bearing structural applications requiring specific structural grades, standards such as GOST 30245, EN 10219, or ASTM A500 may be preferred.
| Application Area | Typical Uses |
| Industrial Pipeline | Water, air, low-pressure fluid transportation |
| Oil & Gas | Auxiliary pipelines, service lines |
| Mechanical Engineering | Machine parts, equipment frames |
| Construction | Structural supports, frameworks |
| Heating Systems | Heating and auxiliary piping |
| Transportation | Vehicle and equipment components |
The main advantages include:
| Item | GOST 10705 Grade 20 | ASTM A53 Grade B |
| Region | Russia/CIS | USA |
| Type | ERW | ERW/SMLS |
| Material | Steel 20 | Carbon Steel |
| Application | General piping | Pressure piping |
| Standard | Function |
| GOST 10704 | Dimension requirements |
| GOST 10705 | Technical requirements |
GOST 10704 specifies the dimensions of welded steel pipes, while GOST 10705 specifies the technical requirements, testing, and acceptance criteria.
1. Standard and Material Verification
Confirm that the pipe meets:
Standard:GOST 10705-80
Material Grade:Steel 20 (Сталь 20)
Type:ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) Steel Pipe
Buyers should also distinguish between GOST 10704 (dimensions) and GOST 10705 (technical requirements).
2. Quality Control and Testing
Key inspection items include:
Chemical composition analysis
Mechanical property testing
Weld seam inspection
Dimensional inspection
3. Supplier Capability
Buyers should evaluate the manufacturer’s:

Generally yes, GOST 10705 Grade 20 is comparable to China’s 20# steel, but they are not exactly identical standards.
GOST 10705 Grade 20 pipe is: Electrically Welded Steel Pipe (ERW / Electric Resistance Welded Pipe)
Yes, but mainly for non-critical or low-pressure applications.
For high-pressure oil and gas transmission pipelines, customers usually select dedicated pipeline standards such as:
GOST 10705 Grade 20 is more suitable for general industrial piping and mechanical applications.
