GOST 8732 is a national standard for hot-rolled seamless steel pipes established by the former Soviet Union, which specifies technical requirements for the dimensional range, wall thickness tolerances, length, and cross-sectional shape of hot-rolled seamless steel pipes. Its full name is:
GOST 8732-78: Hot-rolled seamless steel pipes. It primarily specifies the dimensional standards and tolerances for hot-rolled seamless pipes. This standard is widely used in structural and mechanical applications, such as in the petroleum, machinery manufacturing, construction, and boiler manufacturing industries. The standard imposes strict dimensional requirements and must be used in conjunction with GOST 8731 during production.

For total length deflection, the standard specifies that the total deflection—calculated by multiplying the deflection per meter by the total length—shall not exceed 0.15% × total length (for standard accuracy).
GOST 8732 does not specify steel grades on its own; it is typically applied in conjunction with the following standards:
| Grade | Type |
| 10 | Low-carbon steel |
| 20 | High-quality carbon steel |
| 35 | Medium-carbon steel |
| 45 | Medium-high-carbon steel |
20 steel pipe is the most widely used grade under GOST 8732, equivalent to China’s 20# steel and the U.S. ASTM A106 Gr. B , with similar chemical compositions but slight differences in mechanical property classifications. A106 is primarily used for pressure piping, with a tensile strength of ≥ 415 MPa and an elongation of ≥ 20%; 20 steel has a tensile strength of 410–550 MPa and an elongation of ≥ 24%.
| Grade | Type |
| 09G2S | Low-alloy steel |
| 17G1S | High-strength steel |
| 10GS | Alloy steel |
09G2S is a representative grade of low-alloy high-strength steel in the GOST 8732 system and is a distinctive Russian grade.
Equivalence: Equivalent to China’s Q345B or 16Mn, and Europe’s S355J2H.
Example: 09G2S
09 → Carbon content of approximately 0.09%
G → Contains manganese (Mn)
2 → Manganese content grade
S → Contains silicon (Si)
Hot-rolled seamless steel pipes manufactured in accordance with GOST 8732 must undergo the following tests to ensure that they meet all performance requirements.
GOST 8732 Chemical Analysis
Verifies whether the steel grade of the steel pipe complies with the requirements of GOST 8732 for carbon or low-alloy steel.
Lattening/Bending/Forming Test
One of the most critical performance tests for seamless pipes, verifying whether cracks appear in the pipe wall when the pipe is flattened to a specified distance.
GOST 8732 Dimensional & Visual Inspection
Dimensions must be within tolerance limits, and the surface must be free of defects such as cracks, folds, and delamination.
GOST 8732 End Inspection
Inspects the flatness of the tube ends (Square / Beveled End).
GOST 8732 Tensile Test
Standard test specimens (round bars or pipe sections) are prepared in accordance with GOST 1497 to determine the pipe’s tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
Impact Test/KV Test
Uses the Charpy V-notch (CVN) test method to evaluate the steel pipe’s low-temperature toughness and prevent brittle fracture.
GOST 8732 also specifies requirements for the marking of steel pipes, primarily referencing the supporting standard GOST 8731. This ensures that steel pipes are traceable upon shipment and that their quality complies with the standard.
General Marking Requirements
1. Manufacturer name / trademark
2. Standard number GOST 8732
3. Steel grade
4. Dimensional information
5. Heat number / Batch number
There are three common marking methods: Paint Marking / Stamping / Tag / Label
GOST 8732 steel pipes offer high strength and good machinability. With no weld seams, their pressure resistance is significantly higher than that of welded steel pipes with the same wall thickness. They have a wide range of applications and can operate under extreme conditions, including high temperature and high pressure, as well as low temperatures.
They are indispensable base materials in heavy industrial sectors such as petroleum, energy, chemical, and machinery manufacturing.
