API 5CT T95

API 5CT T95 is a high-strength, hydrogen sulfide-resistant (sour service) steel grade used in oil casing and tubing, primarily for high-pressure, deep-well environments containing H₂S (hydrogen sulfide). It belongs to the high-strength sour service steel grade system within the API 5CT standard and is positioned between C90 and P110.

API 5CT T95 Strength Requirements and Mechanical Properties

Yield Strength: 95 ksi ≤ YS ≤ 110 ksi (655–758 MPa)
Tensile Strength: Minimum tensile strength of 105 ksi (724 MPa)
Hardness Limit
Hardness ≤ 25.4 HRC; this is one of the core requirements for T95.

Because:

  • In H₂S environments
  • High-hardness steel is highly susceptible to SSC (sulfide stress cracking)
  • API and NACE impose strict controls on hardness

T95 must meet the following requirements:

  • Maximum hardness ≤ 25.4 HRC
  • Finer grain size
  • Lower S/P impurity content

Why is T95 suitable for sour service?

This is the key difference between T95 and standard P110.
What is sour service?
It refers to a corrosive environment containing:
H₂S
CO₂
chloride ions
and high-salinity water.

In this environment, the following is likely to occur:

Failure ModeEnglish Abbreviation / Term
Sulfide Stress CrackingSSC
Hydrogen-Induced CrackingHIC
Stress Corrosion CrackingSCC
Hydrogen EmbrittlementHydrogen Embrittlement

How API 5CT T95 Resists Sour Service Corrosion

Controlling Hardness
The higher the hardness, the more likely hydrogen atoms are to accumulate, and the more prone the material is to brittle fracture. Therefore, the hardness of T95 must be less than 25.4 HRC.
Quenching and Tempering (Quenched & Tempered)
T95 must be used:
ProcessFunction
QuenchingIncrease strength
TemperingReduce brittleness

This is the only way to achieve high strength, high toughness, and resistance to SSC all at once.

Lower levels of impurity elements
API 5CT T95 imposes strict controls on the following P and S elements. Inclusions can act as crack initiation sites.

API 5CT T95 Chemical Composition

API 5CT does not specify a fixed chemical composition for T95; instead, it specifies performance requirements.

Common design approaches in the industry:

ElementTypical Range
C0.25–0.40%
Mn0.50–1.50%
CrProperly added
MoImproves tempering stability
NiImproves low-temperature toughness
S/PUltra-low controlled

The key point is not “high-alloy steel.”
Rather, it is “achieving sour service performance through heat treatment and clean steel processes.”

Common Applications of API 5CT T95 Casing and Tubing

Deep Sour Wells

Deep sour wells are one of the most typical and critical application scenarios for API 5CT T95.

As oil and gas resources are increasingly developed in deep and ultra-deep formations, downhole environments place higher demands on the strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term service stability of casing and tubing.

Particularly in sour environments containing H₂S, conventional high-strength steel grades are prone to sulfide stress cracking (SSC), making T95 a critical choice for many deep well projects.

Typical operating conditions usually include:
ParameterRange
Depth3000–7000 m
Pressure70–120 MPa
H₂SMedium to high content
Temperature120–180°C

In such environments, API 5CT T95 not only offers high resistance to crushing and internal pressure but also effectively reduces the risk of stress-corrosion cracking (SSC) caused by acidic media. As a result, it is widely used in production casing for deep oil and gas wells and in high-pressure tubing systems.

As a professional OCTG steel pipe manufacturer, ALLLAND Steel Pipe strictly controls the heat treatment process, hardness range, and steel cleanliness during the production of API 5CT T95 products to ensure long-term stable operation in deep-well acidic environments.

Leveraging a mature seamless steel pipe production system and comprehensive quality inspection processes, ALLLAND Steel Pipe is able to provide highly reliable API 5CT T95 casing and tubing solutions for global oil and gas projects.

High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) Gas Wells

With the rapid growth of unconventional natural gas development, HPHT (High-Pressure, High-Temperature) gas wells have become a key application area for API 5CT T95.
T95 is commonly used in:

  • High-sulfur natural gas
  • Shale gas
  • Tight gas
  • Deep gas reservoirs

Acidic Wells on Offshore Platforms

In offshore oil and gas development, steel pipes must not only withstand high-pressure conditions downhole but also endure complex marine corrosion environments.

The marine atmosphere and seawater contain high levels of salt spray, chloride ions, and corrosive agents, which impose stricter requirements on casing materials for offshore sour wells.

Particularly in high-sulfur offshore oil fields such as those in the Middle East, T95 has become a common high-end casing steel grade for sour wells due to its excellent resistance to SSC and high pressure-bearing capacity.

Wells with high CO₂ and H₂S mixtures

Wells subject to mixed corrosion from both CO₂ and H₂S are considered one of the most severe and hazardous operating environments in the oil and gas industry.
API 5CT T95 is commonly used for:

    • Production casing
    • Tubing
    • Tubing sections near packers

Particularly in high-pressure, highly corrosive natural gas wells, T95 has become a critical material choice for enhancing long-term wellbore safety and stability.

FAQ

Why do many high-pressure wells use T95 instead of P110?

This is a classic question in OCTG design.
Because:
Although the strength of P110 is higher:
YSP110 > YST95
However:

  • It has higher hardness
  • a higher risk of hydrogen embrittlement
  • a higher risk of SSC

In H₂S environments, High strength ≠ greater safety. For this reason, many sour wells prefer to increase wall thickness and use T95 rather than P110.

Summary

API 5CT T95 is a high-performance OCTG steel grade designed for high-pressure, high-temperature, and H₂S-containing acidic environments, combining high mechanical strength with excellent resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC).

As global oil and gas development continues to expand into deeper, higher-pressure, and more corrosive environments, T95 has become a key material choice for high-end sour-service casing and tubing.

As a specialized OCTG manufacturer, ALLLAND Steel Pipe provides global customers with API 5CT-compliant T95 seamless casing and tubing solutions that meet the demands of complex oil and gas projects for strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term service stability.
