API 5L PSL 2

API 5L is a standard for pipeline steel pipes established by the American Petroleum Institute, specifying requirements for steel pipes used in oil, natural gas, and water transmission systems. PSL stands for Product Specification Level.

API 5L is divided into two levels:
PSL 1: Basic Level (Basic Requirements)
PSL 2: Advanced Level (Enhanced Requirements)

API 5L PSL 2 is a high-level pipeline steel standard for oil, natural gas, and water transmission systems, widely used in high-pressure, long-distance, and critical energy engineering projects.

API 5L PSL 2 Chemical Composition Requirements

API 5L PSL 2 specifies chemical composition limits; however, these are not fixed values but rather a range-based system defined by steel grade (X42–X80) that incorporates “low carbon + low impurities + carbon equivalent control + microalloying.”

Carbon Equivalent (CE) Control (PSL 2 Core)

CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15

There are slight variations among different steel grades:

Common limits:

  • CE ≤ 0.43 (low- to medium-strength steel)
  • CE ≤ 0.45–0.47 (X65 and above)

Charpy V-Notch Impact Test

This is the key distinction between PSL 2 and PSL 1.
PSL 2 requirements:

CVN impact testing is mandatory
✔ Test temperatures must be specified (e.g., 0°C, -20°C, -40°C)
✔ Energy absorption requirements must be met

Elongation

The elongation at break for PSL 2 is not a fixed value, but rather a value calculated using a formula.

Basic formula: A = 1940 × U⁰.² / D⁰.⁹
