J55 is primarily used in the infrastructure of oil and gas wells, which includes casing and tubing. Casing serves to support the wellbore and isolate the formation, while tubing is used to transport oil and gas.
API 5CT J55 is commonly used in non-corrosive environments because its strength is not as high; it is suitable for shallow and medium-depth wells and conventional oil and gas production operations.

J55 is a carbon steel/low-alloy steel. Its chemical composition is designed to ensure good weldability and cold workability, while strictly controlling impurity elements such as phosphorus and sulfur.
| Yield Strength | 379–552 MPa |
| Tensile Strength | ≥517 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥19% |
| Hardness | ≤197 HB |
J55 is typically available in two manufacturing forms: seamless pipe (SMLS) and welded pipe (ERW/HFW).
The standard specifies PSL1: as-rolled; PSL2: normalized or tempered.
Seamless pipe is the most common production method for J55 and is suitable for high-demand wells. Heat treatment involves normalization or as-rolled (PSL1) to enhance toughness and microstructural stability.
The welded pipe process is more suitable for large-diameter J55 casing, capable of diameters ≥ 16″, and is generally formed from steel coil or steel plate raw materials. For more information on steel pipes, please check our blog.
According to the API Spec 5CT standard, all oil country tubular goods (OCTG: casing and tubing) must be marked with a color code to facilitate quick identification of the steel grade and prevent misuse.
The color code for API 5CT J55 is green, typically applied as a color band or by painting the entire end.
| Grade | Color Code |
| J55 | Green |
| K55 | Green + White |
| N80 | Red |
| L80 | Red + Brown |
| P110 | White |

API 5CT J55 is typically used in non-extreme conditions, such as shallow oil and gas development or low-pressure wells; it is not suitable for deep wells, high-pressure environments, or environments containing H₂S.

J55 has a tensile strength of ≥ 517 MPa, while K55 has a tensile strength of ≥ 655 MPa. In short, J55 is a more economical base grade, whereas K55 is a more consistent version that offers higher tensile strength at the same yield strength.
Yes.
J55 is suitable for both casing and tubing and is classified as a dual-purpose grade.
