AS/NZS 1163 C250

AS/NZS 1163 C250 is a low-strength steel grade specified in the Australian/New Zealand standard for cold-formed structural steel hollow sections. With a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa, it is suitable for round, square, and rectangular tubes. It offers excellent weldability and is widely used in the construction, mechanical, and general engineering sectors.

AS/NZS 1163 C250 Pipe Grade Meaning

  • C = Cold-formed, meaning that after the steel plate is bent and welded into shape at room temperature, the entire pipe is not subjected to heat treatment; the condition after forming and welding is the final condition.
  • 250 = Minimum yield strength of 250 MPa

C250 belongs to the basic strength grade in AS/NZS 1163: C250 → Low strength grade, C350 → General structural grade, C450 → High strength grade

AS/NZS 1163 C250 Mechanical Properties

Elongation 18%–22%, depending on the diameter-to-thickness (d/t) or width-to-thickness (b/t) ratios.

AS/NZS 1163 C250 Chemical Composition

C250 is a low-carbon structural steel (C ≤ 0.22%), so it offers excellent weldability and reduces the risk of cold cracking.

Element %
C(Carbon) ≤ 0.22
Mn(Manganese) ≤ 1.60
P(Phosphorus) ≤ 0.050
S(Sulfur) ≤ 0.050
Si(Silicon) ≤ 0.50

The chemical composition specified in the standard is not a fixed formula but rather a set of limits. Manufacturers have a certain degree of flexibility during production; as long as the final product meets the mechanical performance requirements of the standard, the specific elemental ratios may be determined by the manufacturer. Therefore, in AS/NZS 1163, the limits on chemical composition are merely a means to an end, with the ultimate goal being to ensure mechanical performance.

Applications of AS/NZS 1163 C250 Steel Pip

C250 is the lowest strength grade in AS 1163 and also the most cost-effective. C250 offers excellent weldability and is suitable for cold bending, cutting, and punching, with good formability.

It is suitable for general engineering structures and lightweight applications that do not require high strength but demand structural stability.

Due to its lower strength, C250 is not suitable for heavy-load structures or long-span structures.

Construction: Light steel structures, carports, fencing

Industrial: Support frames

Infrastructure: Guardrails, sign poles

Agriculture & Light Industry:Greenhouse frames,agricultural equipment frames

C250 vs C250L0

C250L0: The “L0” designation indicates that this material is guaranteed to meet impact toughness standards at 0°C, making it suitable for applications requiring impact resistance in low-temperature environments.

AS/NZS 1163 C250 Equivalent Grades

“Equivalent Grades” do not refer to materials that are strictly identical, but rather to grades with similar performance characteristics.

Standards System Equivalent Grades Strength Grade
AS/NZS C250 250 MPa
EN S235JR / S235JRH 235 MPa
ASTM A500 Grade A ~248 MPa
JIS STKR400(approx.) ~400 MPa
GB Q235B 235 MPa

FAQ

What shapes are available under AS/NZS 1163 C250?

CHS (Circular Hollow Section)

SHS (Square Hollow Section)

RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section)

C250: Lightweight structures; lower strength; high cost-effectiveness; suitable for projects with modest strength requirements.

C350: General-purpose structures; the most common grade; suitable for most standard structural engineering projects.

C450: High-strength applications; high strength; suitable for heavy-load structures and applications with stringent requirements.

Yes, we can customize dimensions based on the specific requirements of the project. We can accommodate not only standard specifications but also non-standard outer diameters, square tubes (SHS), rectangular tubes (RHS), and various wall thicknesses.

However, whether this is feasible from a production standpoint will need to be assessed based on the actual circumstances.
