CHS Pipe Advantages

Circular Hollow Sections feature a closed circular cross-section. Compared to open-section steel, they offer continuous surfaces, uniform stress distribution, and enhanced structural stability, making them ideal for complex load-bearing and structural engineering applications.
Structurally, the circular shape enables uniform force absorption from all directions. This prevents buckling under stress variations in force direction, delivering exceptionally reliable performance.
Circular Hollow Sections possess larger sectional moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia. For the same cross-sectional area, they effectively enhance the safety factor of engineering projects, making them suitable for high-rise buildings, bridges, and similar structures.
Compared to other circular steel pipes, Circular Hollow Sections offer superior load-bearing capacity and mechanical properties. Each pipe undergoes mechanical testing before being sold.

Manufacturing Processes and Surface Treatment

Circular Hollow Section is the general term for tubular materials with circular cross-sections. With numerous standards and production methods available, they can be manufactured to meet specific application requirements. Our company maintains strict control over materials, ensuring steel grades and wall thicknesses strictly comply with standard specifications. These products offer high pressure resistance, strong load-bearing capacity, and robust structural integrity. Below are several production processes and steel grade standards.

CHS Manufacturing Processes

Seamless Tubes
Hot-Rolled: Produced by piercing steel billets, suitable for large-diameter, thick-walled pipes. Offers excellent pressure resistance and high strength for high-pressure environments.
Cold-Drawn: Further processed from hot-rolled tubes, achieving greater dimensional precision and smoother surfaces. Ideal for small-diameter pipes.

Welded Tubes
ERW (Electric Resistance Welded): Suitable for small-diameter pipes. Features high weld seam strength, uniform wall thickness, and rapid production.
LSAW: For large-diameter or ultra-large-diameter pipelines, suitable for pressure pipelines and large-scale load-bearing structures.

Circular Hollow Section Surface Treatment

Surfaces can undergo hot-dip galvanizing, epoxy coating, 3PE, or PP coating. This ensures stable operation in general environments and extended service life in highly corrosive underground conditions.

Typical three-layer PE/PP coating structure thickness:

  • Base layer FBE: 0.3–0.5 mm
  • Intermediate adhesive layer: 0.2–0.3 mm
  • Outer layer PE/PP: 2.0–3.0 mm

CHS Selection Guide

By Steel Grade and Load Capacity
Small supports or light loads: S235 / Q235
Medium-load structures or bridges: S275 / Q355
High-strength pressure or cryogenic pipelines: S355 / 09G2S

By Wall Thickness
Thin-walled (WT ≤5 mm): Lightweight structures, decorative applications, mechanical supports
Thick-walled (WT ≥8 mm): Pressure vessels, bridges, industrial pipelines, long-span structures

FAQ

What are the common steel grades for CHS steel pipes?

Common steel grades for Circular Hollow Sections include: European standards S235, S275, S355; American standard ASTM A500 Gr.B / Gr.C; Chinese and Russian standards Q235, Q355, 09G2S. These steels exhibit yield strengths ranging from 235–355 MPa and tensile strengths approximately 360–630 MPa, meeting structural engineering requirements.

CHS is the abbreviation for Circular Hollow Section. RHS stands for Rectangular Hollow Section, and SHS stands for Square Hollow Section.

Yes, Circular Hollow Sections are widely used in outdoor environments. Surface treatment is generally required to provide corrosion resistance and extend service life. Options include hot-dip galvanizing, epoxy coating, and 3PE coating.
