Pipe Velocity Calculator

Pipe Velocity Calculator

Formula Application and Conversion

v = Q / A

Where A is the cross-sectional area of a circular pipe, calculated as: A = π d² / 4. Since 4 / π ≈ 1.273, the final formula simplifies to:

v = 1.273 × Q / d²

Where GMP = flow rate, and Inch = pipe inner diameter, so

v = 0.4084 × qgpm / din²

This formula is frequently used in the piping industry. You can use it to solve the following problems:

  • Pipe sizing
  • Flow velocity control (to prevent scouring or sedimentation)
  • Pump selection
  • Preliminary calculations for pressure drop estimation

This allows you to directly determine:

  • Whether the flow velocity is appropriate for water or oil transport (typically within the 1–3 m/s range)
  • Flow velocity control in ERW / LSAW / SSAW pipeline designs
  • Whether scouring of the inner wall or sedimentation will occur
