What Are ANSI, ASME, and SAE?

What Are ANSI, ASME, and SAE?

ANSI = American National Standards Institute— an organization responsible for coordinating, accrediting, and approving American national standards.

ASME = American Society of Mechanical Engineers— an important standards-developing organization covering mechanical engineering, pressure equipment, piping, and related fields.

SAE = SAE International— an important standards-developing organization covering automotive engineering, aerospace, materials, mechanical engineering, and other related fields.

ANSI

ANSI is an organization that accredits and approves standards developed through established procedures, allowing them to be recognized as American National Standards. ANSI has accredited many widely recognized standards, including:

  • ANSI Z49.1 → Welding and related safety
  • ANSI/ASME B16.5 → In the historical development and identification of the flange standard, the ANSI designation may also appear.

ASME

ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It develops and maintains a wide range of standards covering mechanical engineering, piping, pressure equipment, and related industries. Common examples include:

SAE

SAE International, historically known as the Society of Automotive Engineers, has a strong connection with automotive engineering. Its standards also cover aerospace, materials, mechanical engineering, and other technical fields.

The table below summarizes the key differences between these three systems for reference.
