Are Square Pipes and Square Steel The Same Thing?

Are Square Pipes and Square Steel The Same Thing?

No. Although square pipe and square steel are sometimes used interchangeably in daily communication, they represent two different categories of steel products in the steel industry.

The key difference is that square pipe is a hollow structural steel section designed mainly for load-bearing applications, while square steel usually refers to solid square steel bars used for machining and fabrication.

The difference is not only about appearance but also involves manufacturing standards, mechanical behavior, weight efficiency, and engineering applications.

Square pipes and tubes are generally referred to as SHS (Square Hollow Sections) or HSS (Hollow Structural Sections); however, in markets such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, and China, the terms “square pipe” and “square steel” are sometimes used interchangeably.

In contrast, North America and Europe maintain a clear distinction between the two products. To avoid procurement issues, it is essential to clarify with the customer whether the item required is a square structural tube.
