ASTM A500 Grade B is a common standard for structural carbon steel pipes, frequently used in support structures for construction and engineering projects.

ASTM A500 is a standard specification for cold-formed, welded, and seamless structural carbon steel pipes, classified into four grades—A, B, C, and D—based on yield strength.

Grade B is one of the grades within the ASTM A500 specification.

A500 Grade B is the most versatile and cost-effective structural steel pipe in ASTM standard.

ALLLAND’s ASTM A500 Grade B steel pipes comply with ASTM international standards and certifications. Available in a comprehensive range of specifications, they are widely used in load-bearing components for building structures, mechanical frameworks, curtain walls, and steel structure projects.

ASTM A500 Grade B Pipe Dimensional Tolerances (Typical)

Wall Thickness Tolerance

Wall Thickness Range(inch)Tolerance  ±(inch)Note
≤ 0.18812.5%Deviations in thin wall thickness are calculated as a percentage.
0.188 – 0.250.015Absolute value can be used.
0.25 – 0.3750.020Same as above.
0.375 – 0.50.025Same as above.
> 0.55%Take the larger value.

The tolerances vary depending on the wall thickness range, and the wall thickness in the weld area can deviate slightly from the base material thickness.

The standard only controls the effective structural wall thickness. For square and rectangular tubes, the wall thickness is measured at the center of the flat side, excluding the corners.

Length Tolerance (Cut Length)

The standard length of steel pipes is typically 6 meters, with a permissible length tolerance of ±1/8 ‘’ (~3 mm).

Straightness Tolerances

ASTM 500 specifies that the camber should be ≤ 0.5% of the pipe length.

Weight Tolerance per foot

The allowable deviation for the weight of steel pipe per foot is ±10% (calculated based on nominal dimensions).

Chemical Composition of Grade B Steel Tubes

Grade B has a carbon content of ≤0.26%, making it a low-carbon steel.

It offers good weldability and can be directly subjected to secondary processing such as welding, drilling, cutting, bending, and painting.

Composition, %ASTM A500 Grade B
Heat AnalysisProduct Analysis
Carbon, max0.260.3
Manganese, max1.351.4
Phosphorus, max0.0350.045
Sulfur, max0.0350.045
Copper, min0.20.18

In the ASTM 500 standard, grades B and D have the same chemical composition requirements. Their tensile strength and elongation are also identical; the main difference is that grade D has a higher yield strength.

Mechanical Properties of Grade B Steel Tubes

Grade B has a yield strength of ≥315 MPa; it offers moderate strength and good toughness, making it suitable for most structural load requirements.

GradeASTM A500 Grade B
Tensile strength, min58000 psi [400 MPa]
Yield strength, min46000 psi [315 MPa]
Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm), min, %23

ASTM A500 Grade B must also undergo tensile, flattening, and bending tests to verify that the steel pipe meets the requirements for yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation.

Depending on specific conditions, ASTM A500 Grade B may also undergo hardness testing.

A500 Grade B vs A500 Grade C

Grade B Grade C
Yield strength 46 ksi (315 MPa) 50 ksi (345 MPa)
Tensile strength 58 ksi min 62 ksi min
Cost Lower Slightly higher
Frequency of use ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Grade C can be considered a strength upgrade of Grade B, and is generally used in high-load structures. Grade C is also more expensive than Grade B because it has stricter requirements for composition control and strength.

For ordinary structures, Grade B is more economical.

Equivalent standards to ASTM A500

Standards from different countries/regions are not absolutely interchangeable; the most applicable standard should be determined based on the actual working conditions.

FAQ

What is ASTM A500 Grade B?

ASTM A500 Grade B is a standard for cold-formed carbon steel tubes intended for structural use and is one of the most commonly used structural tubing grades.
Tube types include square tubes, rectangular tubes, and round tubes.

Yield Strength: ≥ 46 ksi (315 MPa); Tensile Strength: ≥ 58 ksi (400 MPa+), suitable for most structural engineering requirements.

Grade B is widely used in load-bearing structures, such as building steel structures, bridges and infrastructure, machinery, and support frames.
