Mechanical Properties of API 5L X80 Pipe

The core of API 5L X80’s mechanical properties lies in its excellent balance of high strength and high toughness. The table below shows detailed mechanical property parameters based on the API 5L standard (PSL2) and actual production data.

Performance Indicator API 5L PSL2 Requirement Description
Yield Strength 555 – 705 MPa The stress value at which the material begins permanent plastic deformation.
Tensile Strength 625 – 825 MPa Reflects the material’s ultimate load-bearing capacity.
Yield-to-Tensile Ratio Typically ≤ 0.93 A lower ratio indicates better plastic reserve and deformation capacity.
Elongation after Fracture Calculated based on wall thickness, typically ≥ 18-22% Reflects the material’s ability to deform plastically.
Charpy V-Notch Impact Energy (CVN) Individual ≥ 40J, Average ≥ 60J at -20°C Measures the material’s resistance to impact loads and brittle fracture.
Microhardness (HV10) Typically ≤ 300 HV (no uniform limit, depends on project) For sour service, typically ≤ 250 HV is required.

FAQ

Why can API 5L X80 only be supplied in PSL2 and Q/M conditions?

The minimum yield strength of API 5L X80 reaches 555 MPa. Achieving such high strength requires obtaining a refined microstructure through controlled rolling plus accelerated cooling or quenching and tempering, thereby ensuring low-temperature toughness and weldability. Simple hot rolling (R) or normalizing (N) cannot meet its performance requirements.

PSL2 has mandatory requirements for impact toughness (CVN), drop weight tear testing (DWTT), carbon equivalent control, non-destructive testing, etc., and also imposes an upper limit on yield strength (not exceeding 705 MPa) to prevent the material from becoming too strong and brittle.

Yes, and API 5L X80 is an important option for deep-sea high-pressure subsea pipelines. Its high-strength characteristic allows for the use of relatively thinner walls in deep-water high-pressure environments, thereby reducing pipeline weight, lowering laying tension requirements, and saving installation costs.

API 5L X80 has good weldability, but requires more precise construction control.
