Cold-drawn Seamless Pipe is a high-precision seamless steel pipe manufactured by further processing hot-rolled seamless steel pipes through cold drawing or cold rolling at ambient temperatures.
During cold drawing, the pipe undergoes dual processing through dies and mandrels, significantly improving its outer diameter, wall thickness, and straightness. This results in higher dimensional accuracy, smoother surface quality, and more uniform and stable mechanical properties.
Compared to hot-rolled seamless steel pipes, cold-drawn seamless steel pipes are better suited for applications demanding higher precision, assembly consistency, and machinability. Examples include hydraulic systems, precision mechanical components, and the automotive industry.

As is well known, cold-drawn pipes undergo multiple cold drawing processes rather than a single one. Why is repeated cold drawing necessary to achieve standard wall thickness and dimensions?
First, we must understand the purpose of cold drawing: it reduces the pipe’s wall thickness and inner/outer diameters to meet specifications. A single cold drawing process with excessive dimensional reduction risks pipe breakage or surface defects; conversely, insufficient reduction lowers efficiency and increases costs. Multiple drawing passes minimize the risk of fractures and cracks.
Secondly, intermediate annealing is performed after each drawing pass. This process eliminates work hardening, restores material plasticity, and prepares the pipe for subsequent operations.

The core value of cold-drawn seamless pipe lies in its precise dimensions. Typically small-sized, cold-drawn pipes require tighter tolerance ranges and multiple forming processes to achieve ideal dimensional tolerances.
Outer Diameter Tolerance: ±0.05 to ±0.10 mm. For higher precision pipes, tolerances must be controlled within ±0.03 mm (depending on specifications). Smaller tolerances enhance adaptability across scenarios and broaden application possibilities.
Wall Thickness Tolerance: ±8% to ±10%. For precision pipes, tolerances are ±5% or even tighter, with uniform wall thickness being paramount.
They are particularly suitable for industries with high precision requirements, such as hydraulic systems, machinery manufacturing, and the automotive industry.
Cold-drawn pipes are more suitable for applications demanding high precision and surface quality, but hot-rolled pipes remain the primary choice for large-diameter, thick-walled applications.
