Description

Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS), also known as rectangular steel tubes, are structural-grade pipes with a rectangular cross-section. They are primarily produced by Electric Resistance Welding (ERW), in which steel strip is formed into a round tube and then reshaped into a rectangle through precision roll forming. These hollow sections may also be hot-formed for thicker sizes to enhance wall uniformity and dimensional stability. RHS offer high strength-to-weight ratios, particularly in bending along the major axis, making them efficient materials for beams and columns that bear unidirectional loads.

As versatile hollow sections, RHS are available in a wide dimensional range and conform to global standards including ASTM A500, EN 10219/EN 10210, JIS G3466, and AS/NZS 1163. The sections feature clean edges, excellent weldability, and superior torsional resistance, ideal for buildings, bridges, machinery frames, and heavy structural applications.

  • Produced via ERW (cold or hot formed) process with smooth, uniform welds; seamless RHS available for special cases.
  • High strength-to-weight ratio — effective for unidirectional bending loads in columns and beams.
  • Available in precise dimensional tolerances and consistent mechanical performance per EN and ASTM standards.
  • Surface options include black, oiled, galvanized, painted, or powder-coated finishes for corrosion protection.

Square Hollow Sections (SHS) are structural tubes produced by high-frequency Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) or hot-forming processes. In the ERW route, steel strip is cold-rolled into a round tube, welded, and then shaped into a square by sizing rolls. Heat treatment relieves residual stresses, ensuring high dimensional precision (±0.5 mm). These hollow sections are also manufactured in hot-formed routes by heating round tubes to 900–950 °C and hydraulically expanding them into square shapes, achieving wall uniformity above 95%.

The closed square hollow section provides excellent torsional rigidity and load-bearing performance. High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) grades with yield strengths ≥ 355 MPa offer lighter weight and improved weldability — ideal for architectural frameworks, mechanical trusses, and heavy structural members. SHS conform to ASTM A500, EN 10219/EN 10210, JIS G3466, and AS/NZS 1163.

  • Manufactured via ERW (cold or hot formed) process; seamless SHS available for specific engineering needs.
  • Excellent torsional and compressive performance due to closed-section geometry.
  • High dimensional precision (±0.5 mm) and uniform wall thickness (≥95%) after forming and heat treatment.
  • Available in HSLA grades (≥ 355 MPa yield strength) for optimized strength-to-weight ratio.

Main Applications

HSS (SHS & RHS) provide high torsional rigidity, excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and clean geometry for modern steelwork. With precise dimensions and consistent mechanical properties from ERW/hot-forming, they fit architectural and industrial use cases.

Building Frames & Columns

Primary/secondary members for multi-storey frames, braced cores, perimeter columns; closed sections resist buckling and torsion.

Beams, Trusses & Bridges

Efficient chords/diagonals for roof trusses, pedestrian/pipe bridges and platforms where stiffness and aesthetics matter.

Machinery & Fabrication

Equipment bases, gantries, racks, conveyors and general fabrication requiring straightness, weldability and repeatability.

Architectural & Façade

Canopies, façade mullions, handrails and guardrails; crisp edges and smooth faces deliver clean architectural lines.

Infrastructure & Energy

Solar mounting, sign structures, agricultural frames and utility supports; coatings available for long-term corrosion protection.

Advantages
